If I gave you $200 right now and told you that you could keep half as long as you gave the other half to a graphic designer, would you take the money?
No, that’s not a trick question.
It’s a business model.
I’m sure you’ve heard the old saying, “It takes money to make money.”
But nobody ever said that you have to use YOUR OWN MONEY to make money.
Right now, all around the world, “digital middlemen” are using other people’s money to get rich. And many of them are starting out completely flat broke.
What Is A Digital Middleman?
A digital middleman is someone that connects a buyer with a service provider.
Let me give you a quick example…
Let’s say Company X needs a logo designed and their budget is $300.
There are millions of graphic designers out there that can create a great-looking, professional logo for Company X. Some of those designers will charge $300 for a logo. Others will only charge $30.
A digital middleman will find a great designer that only charges $30 to create a logo. They’ll sell it to Company X for $300. Then the digital middleman keeps the $270 difference.
It’s a win, win, win…
Company X gets the beautiful, professional logo they were looking for.
The graphic designer gets paid the $30 he or she typically charges to create a logo.
And the digital middleman gets paid $270 for… well… practically nothing. He simply found a client that was willing to pay more than the designer charges and placed himself in the middle.
Not only did the digital middleman make substantially more money than the designer, but he also made money without spending a penny of his own.
Starting With Nothing
Typically when you hire a someone to perform a task like designing a logo, you’ll need to have some cash upfront. This is normally done using an escrow account.
Understandably, service providers like graphing designers don’t want to do a lot of work only to get stiffed on the bill. And of course, clients don’t want to pay a service provider upfront before the work is delivered.
So how do both parties avoid the risk of getting screwed out of money?
Once the digital middleman finds someone to provide the service they need, both parties will have to agree on a price for the service. Then the digital middleman will deposit the full amount into an escrow account. Once the service provider has completed the job, the digital middleman will approve it and the money in the escrow account will be released.
Now what if the digital middleman is literally starting with $0?
The digital middleman tells their client that they need a small deposit to begin the job.
Here’s how it would work with our logo example from before…
Company X wants to hire the digital middleman to have a logo designed for $300.
The digital middleman tells Company X that he requires a deposit of $30 to begin the job.
Now the digital middleman has found a graphic designer to create a logo for $30, so he deposits that $30 into an escrow account.
Once the designer delivers the logo, the digital middleman releases the funds to the designer. Then the middleman delivers the logo to Company X, and Company X pays the middleman the remaining $270.
Again… it’s a win, win, win… and the digital middleman never needed a single dollar out of his own pocket to make the $270.
